Serums and ampoules are where a routine gets targeted. Compared with a toner or essence, they carry a higher concentration of active ingredients — niacinamide for the look of dullness and uneven tone, hyaluronic acid for deep hydration, or plant-derived extracts like willow bark for skin prone to congestion. An ampoule is typically the most concentrated version of a serum, often used in a short, focused course rather than every day indefinitely.
Layer serums after your toner or essence and before moisturiser, thinnest texture to thickest. If you use more than one serum, apply the wateriest first and the more oil-based one last, and give each a minute to sink in before the next layer.
One serum, used consistently, outperforms three used inconsistently. Pick the ingredient that matches your main concern — hydration, tone, texture or comfort — and give it four to six weeks, one full skin cycle, before adding another.
